ashtanga

Ashtanga Yoga (sometimes called Ashtanga-Vinyasa), brought to Western practitioners by the late Sri K. Pattabhi Jois, synchronizes breath with set sequences of postures that progressively open, strengthen and cleanse the body and still the mind. The asana (posture) practice produces an intense internal heat and purifying sweat that detoxifies muscles and organs. The result is improved circulation, a light, strong body and a calm mind.

Ashtanga (“eight limbs”) is much more than asana, and includes guidelines for moral/ethical conduct and restraint (yama and niyama), breath control (pranayama), mental discipline (pratyahara, dharana, dhyana) and fulfillment (samadhi). Ashtanga Mysore
Mysore is the traditional method for teaching Ashtanga: as a private class in a group setting. Students are self-led and move at their own pace through all or part of the Ashtanga Primary Series as the instructor circulates through the room and offer verbal guidance and physical assists / adjustments. We will provide ‘cheat sheets’ for those who don’t have the series memorized. Mysore (named for Mysore, India, the home of Ashtanga) is a beautiful, quiet practice and a safe, empowering way to learn. Please have some familiarity with sun salutations (surya namaskara).

Ashtanga Vinyasa
A vigorous but accessible class incorporating key elements of traditional Ashtanga practice. Though this class is appropriate for all experience levels , we highly recommend familiarity with Ashtanga sun salutations.

Ashtanga Primary Series (Led)
The challenging traditional Ashtanga method synchronizes the breath with a set sequence of 72 postures. The quick pace produces intense internal heat and purifying sweat that detoxifies muscles and organs and balances the nervous system. We highly recommend some experience with traditional Ashtanga; no new beginners, please. If in doubt, please talk to a Practice instructor or call us at 937.321.7676.

Please see the schedule for Ashtanga class times.
